mindfulness- based cognitive therapy
MBCT was developed by John Teasdale et al., on the basis of the
Buddhist inspired work of Jon Kabat Zinn. At the heart of this approach
lies Mindfulness, a moment-by-moment awareness of sensations, feelings
and thoughts, which encourages us to bring an accepting, non-judgemental
attitude to our experience. Rather than habitually turning away from
pain and discomfort, both physical and emotional, we recognise
that we have a choice, and sometimes, with kindness and patience, we
enter more fully into the unpleasant experience. Perhaps we will find
that the experience simply dissolves - however, it only works if we
cultivate an attitude that doesn’t look for results, paradoxically as
that may seem. More important than instant results is an enhanced
quality of life which includes taking pleasure in small things and
embracing both pleasure and pain with equanimity.
